Newcastle trainer Jason Deamer is plotting an upset with Greek Hero at Rosehill on Saturday and his horse has a lot going for him.

The six-year-old is running in a Benchmark 78 (1800m) fifth-up after running a series of good races this time in.

Greek Hero is coming off third, second and fourth placings and has been within two lengths off the winner on each occasion at Newcastle, Eagle Farm and Randwick.

“He’s ready to show his best,” Deamer said.

“He’ll definitely enjoy getting his toe into the ground and he’s been going well this time in.”

He’s rated a $12 chance with TAB fixed odds behind $4 favourite Niffler despite taking a little ground off that horse in the final 200m last start.

He has another new rider in Rachel King who will be instructed to be patient on him so he can show his best.

“His run last time was over 1800m and that’s where he goes to again on Saturday. You’ve just got to ride him quiet and he’ll find the line,” Deamer said.

“When you ride him handy he sort of just plugs away but when you ride him quiet he really hits the line well and Rachel will ride him well in conditions that will help him.

“He looks to be my best chance.”

Savvy Crown kicks off the day for Deamer on Saturday in the Midway Handicap (1400m) where he resumes off a 13-week spell.

He’s run fifth of five and seventh of seven in his two barrier trials but Deamer said punters should completely ignore that and look at the fact he’s won fresh in the past.

“He’s been going well after having the two trials back,” he said.

“He doesn’t usually show much in his trials. Actually, he does nothing in his trials.

“He does go well first-up and won fresh last time even though it was at Muswellbrook, but he’s ticking over nicely.”

The five-year-old is by Savabeel who is a renowned producer of wet trackers and Savvy Crown is no different having won two of his four wins on rain-affected ground.

Deamer is hoping the predicted storms leading up to Saturday hit the Parramatta region.

“That’s mainly why we’ve got him in this race so we’re hoping the rain keeps on coming,” he said.

“He’s taken quite a while to mature but he’s fully developed now. We weren’t sure if he was a miler or 2000m horse but we think he’s probably best kept fresh for a mile.”

Chad Schofield will ride Savvy Crown and another of Deamer’s horses, Awesome Lad.

“He’s a very good young jockey and always has been,” Deamer said.

The trainer could run him on Friday night at Canterbury of on Saturday at Rosehill.

“He’s looking for that little bit further now and you’d think he’d be right there and he’ll race well on both tracks so hopefully he can win,” Deamer said.

Awesome Lad has put a pretty good record together to date (13:3-3-3) and last ran three weeks ago at Eagle Farm when finishing third.

“He’s going well,” Deamer said.

“His last run in Brisbane was good and he’s done well since then. The trip away seems to have sparked him up.

“We try to get them up there if they’re good enough and it just breaks up their routine and does them good.”
