McGovern shines despite Eagles defeat
In just his second AFL game, North Albany product Jeremy McGovern showed why he deserves more opportunity at senior level for the West Coast Eagles, with a telling display in a losing side against reigning premiers Hawthorn.
McGovern was one the Eagles' shining lights in their disappointing 44-point loss to the Hawks at Aurora Stadium, collecting a game-high 10 marks, 15 disposals and kicking two final-quarter goals.
After making his AFL debut earlier this season, in which he played predominantly in defence, McGovern was brought back into the Eagles side to play forward in the absence of the injured Josh Kennedy.
Four of his 10 marks were contested, including a spectacular grab on the outer wing.
He continually made his presence felt by crashing packs and leading up the ground.
Eagles coach Adam Simpson was impressed by McGovern's performance in his post-game press conference.
"He's got a great pair of hands," Simpson said.
"He's footy smart and he's a natural footballer.
"It was really pleasing for him to take 10 marks and have an impact.
"He's got presence, so that was pleasing."
With Kennedy nursing a fractured cheek, McGovern's performance on Saturday will help his chances of retaining a spot in the side in coming weeks.
"I think we've got to (give him more opportunities)," Simpson said.
"We've got Josh Kennedy coming back at some stage in the next week or two, so we've got to find the balance with that.
"We've also got to get the supply right, too."
McGovern was out of favour with Simpson during the pre-season after returning from the off-season out of shape, but has not put a foot wrong since and has been a fine contributor for East Perth in the WAFL.
He also spent time during Saturday's loss playing on fellow Great Southern footballer Angus Litherland.
Litherland was again solid in defence for the Hawks, with 15 possessions and a number of spoils.
