Michael Chalmers: Man charged with murder after 62-year-old woman found dead in Melbourne brothel
The man charged with murdering a woman whose body was found at a Melbourne brothel has been named as he appeared in court.
Michael James Chalmers, 35, made a brief appearance in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday flanked by two court security officers.
He did not speak during the hearing, only nodding to show he understood when told he would be remanded into custody.
Detail of the allegations against Mr Chalmers were not aired in court; however, it’s alleged he murdered a 62-year-old woman whose remains were found last Friday.
Police were called to a Cowper St property in Footscray for a welfare check just after 8pm on November 29, finding the woman’s body.
Investigators will allege she was killed early in the morning on November 27 – two days earlier.
In court, prosecutor Angela Liantzakis opposed the woman’s name being released to the media, citing concerns her family have yet to be notified.
“Only the deceased’s daughter has been notified,” she said.
Mr Chalmers will return to court in April.
