Albany Junior Cricket Association emerged victorious in the under-14 division after a sensational undefeated week at the annual Junior Country Week Cricket tournament, which finished in Perth last Friday.

The under-14 division was introduced only last year in the long-running competition but Albany dominated from start to finish last week as they finished with five wins from as many games and more than six points clear on top of the ladder.

Albany began the successful week with a 182-run thrashing of Central Midlands last Monday, led by 61 from captain Tom Wolfe, and followed that up with a five-wicket victory over Peel last Tuesday.

After bowling Peel out for 158 with Josh Noakes, Oscar Gilbert, Wolfe and Oliver Tetlow all claiming two wickets each, Albany finished their 50 overs at 5-265 with Michael Ferreira scoring a brilliant 108 and his brother Matthew also posting a half century.

On Wednesday, Albany made light work of West Pilbara in their third one-day match, reaching an imposing 8-307, with Noakes posting the side’s second century of the tournament when he blasted 122.

West Pilbara were bowled out for 117 in reply with Jordan Clark, Thomas Hunt and Tetlow each snaring two wickets.

In their sole Twenty20 fixture on Thursday, Albany restricted Geraldton to 4-120 before going on to record their fourth win of the week after posting 3-132 in reply, led by an unbeaten 61 from Jordan Clark.

To wrap up the brilliant performance, Albany skittled Eastern Goldfields for 86 in their final match on Friday with Jordan Clark (2-8) and Hunt (2-12) leading the way with the ball.

Albany easily reached the victory target later that day, finishing at 7-214 from 39 overs to claim the under-14s title.

Michael Ferreira finished with a half century and Hunt chipped in with 36.

For the week, Michael Ferreira finished third in the competition’s leading run scorers with 185 runs at an average of 37, while Noakes made 183 runs in three innings at an average of 183 to be fourth.

Tetlow was Albany’s leading wicket taker across the five games with seven wickets and Jordan Clark snared six in total.

Albany’s first XI side could not secure back-to-back A-section titles after finishing second behind Busselton-Margaret River, who they lost to on day one.

After the opening loss, Albany beat Eastern Goldfields on Tuesday, recorded a 191-run drubbing over Geraldton on Wednesday and defeated Peel in a Twenty20 on Thursday.

On the final day, Albany bowled Bunbury out for 182 with Fynn Underwood taking 3-34 but they were in all sorts of trouble with the bat after losing early wickets.

They passed the total with two wickets in hand in the 48th over, Liam Want (67) and Bryce Jackson (52 not out) guiding their side home.

Jackson was Albany’s leading run scorer in A-section with 152 runs and Harry Noakes also scored 150 runs while Jack Batchelor was the competition’s leading wicket taker with 12 at an average of 5.83.

Albany’s second XI team finished at the bottom of the B-section standings without a win to their name.
