Strong showing at national championships
Albany Surf Life Saving Club finished a successful season with a strong showing at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships last week on the Sunshine Coast.
Ian Spurgeon claimed silver in the 1km run and bronze in the beach sprints, while Jo Lucas took home silver in the flags event and just missed out on a medal in the sprints.
Beth Hearle finished ninth in the board final, while Wendy and Ian Spurgeon, Trish Hines and Lucas made the final in the beach relay.
Wendy Spurgeon also made the finals in the flags and sprints events and the boat crew just missed out on a spot in the final after a countback.
Albany’s Rob Slattery won gold in the tube race and silver in the single ski while representing Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club.
ASLSC president Rob Mason congratulated all competitors from Albany.
“The club is extremely proud of our Aussies competitors,” he said.
“All our competitors commented on how friendly and well-organised the event was and I know there will be a strong contingent from Albany in 2018 when the Aussies return to WA at Scarborough Beach,”
Medal winner Lucas was happy with her results, especially after she broke her collarbone less than two months ago.
“It was pretty special and unexpected; I broke my collarbone seven weeks ago,” she said.
“It was so lovely to have an Albany team come over and hopefully we get more next year.”
