Opposition opposed to Japanese whaling

KATHERINE MOUNTAINAlbany Advertiser

The Federal Coalition announced an ambitious plan to harness the city’s young people in a bid to stop Japanese whaling in Albany last week.

Shadow Federal climate action minister Greg Hunt used his trip to Albany to announce the coalition’s plan to urge an end to Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean by creating a team of Australian youth ambassadors to Japan.

Under the plan, young people aged 16-25 would visit Japan and put the case to other young people to stop whaling.

At least one of the ambassadors, who would be selected through an essay-writing competition, would be from Albany.

“Visiting Whale World in Albany, a unique tourism and education centre, I am reminded of how extremely disappointing it is that whaling looks set to go ahead again this season in the Southern Ocean,” he said.

Mr Hunt said the youth ambassadors would renew the nation’s engagement with the Japanese community, and convey the depth of concern Australians have with whaling.

“We must renew our engagement with the Japanese community.

“This will be done through a team of Australian Youth Ambassadors who will travel to Japan to let the community know of the depth of concern Australians have for whaling.

“We believe the message, coming from the next generation, will be a powerful one, and will have a positive impact on the Japanese people,” he said.
