Margaret puts away 25th title
Margaret Killick required almost her best game to topple reigning Riverview Golf Club ladies champion Maree Slynn and clinch the title for the 25th time last week.
Killick, who has won 25 of the past 35 championships since winning her first in 1980, has not had it all her own way over the past two years, being upstaged by Slynn.
But with a change of format to matchplay from stroke, the battle for the championship came down to a two-way tussle between the pair over 27 holes.
Killick, who was two-up with nine holes remaining in the day, went on to prevail 5-3.
The club life member and handicapper said she was pleased to regain the silverware under the new format.
“It’s a very interesting game, stroke in itself is a challenge but with matchplay you’re playing that person direct,” she said.
“I think I played pretty well, hit them well. She (Slynn) played a good game also.
“It was good to get one back.”
Two 18-hole qualifying rounds of stroke separated the top eight players, who went head-to-head in matchplay, with Killick defeating Wendy Jones and Dot Ruck in the semifinal.
The 65-year-old believed she has plenty more years of golf left in her.
“I’ve had a lot of fun, I’ve played golf for 38 years — I’d like to play as long as I can,” she said.
Alan Ebert ended Rod Bassett’s reign as men’s champion.
