The Albany sky will be painted with colour when beautiful kites will launch into the air at ANZAC Peace Park on Sunday.

About 150 kites will catch flight to mark the 11th anniversary of the Albany Kite Fiesta.

Kite maestro Michael Alvares said he was eager for another fantastic edition of the spectacle.

“It’s a wonderful time to come to Albany every year and meeting heaps of people and having fun with families,” he said.

The day is sponsored by Healthway to promote healthy eating, and the “dried fruit drop” is a key feature on the day.

“I will send a koala kite up into the air and open a velcro pouch where there are plastic bags filled with dried fruit like sultanas, bananas and apricots,” Mr Alvares said.

“Once the pouch opens they will fall from abut 50m in the air attached to parachutes and helicopters.

“It’s a magnificent spectacle to watch all these bags fall from the sky into people’s arms.”

The fan-favourite 12m whale shark and 6m dolphin kites will take flight once more, joined by a vibrant array of Japanese koi kites and various other colourful companions in the sky.

Members of the public are encouraged to bring their own kite or create a box kite from recycled materials on the day.

The first kites will set sail at 10am before being withdrawn at 4pm at the park on Kinjarling Albany foreshore.

In conjunction with Healthway the fiesta is supported by Go for 2 & 5 and Green Skills Inc.
