Jail on cards after police pursuit
A 24-year-old man who rammed a police car and led officers on a pursuit through Walpole and Denmark has been warned he faces a mandatory six-month jail term after pleading guilty to a string of charges in Albany Magistrate's Court this week.
Michael Ashley Brown from Halls Head confessed to being under the influence of drugs when he evaded police and drove into the side of a police car on South Coast Highway last Monday.
Police allege they had caught up to Brown when he veered onto the wrong side of the road, braked heavily and rammed into the driver's side of the police car, forcing both vehicles off the road.
The incident resulted in Brown being charged with dangerous driving to escape pursuit, exceeding the speed limit, failing to stop for police, failing to wear a seatbelt, crossing continuous white lines and driving while under suspension. He plead guilty to all charges.
Brown was also charged with three counts of possessing drug paraphernalia after police also found a glass pipe with traces of methamphetamine and a smoking implement with traces of cannabis
Appearing via video link from Albany Regional Prison on Monday afternoon, Brown also faced 15 charges from a crime spree in Perth, where he admitted to 12 counts of gains benefit by fraud and one count of attempting to claim a benefit by fraud and two breaches of bail.
Coming to grips with his offending during his court appearance, Brown told the court he regretted his actions and was "clean of the drugs" since being apprehended.
He denied the opportunity for legal representation, deciding to plead guilty.
But Magistrate Tanya Watt warned Brown his guilty plea to dangerous driving to escape pursuit would carry a mandatory six-month minimum prison term.
After originally pleading for the opportunity to be granted bail, he fought back tears when telling the court his first time in prison had him scared for his safety. Brown will be sentenced on January 15.
