Get ready for glitz and glamour at concert

Jessica CuthbertAlbany Advertiser

The Albany City Wind Ensemble will take to the stage at the Albany Baptist Church on Saturday, June 25 for their annual concert, Stage, Screen and All that Jazz.

The ACWE is a 40-piece concert band made up of musicians playing trumpets, saxophones, trombones, flutes, clarinets, horns and a menagerie of percussion instruments and has been performing together for 12 years.

The ensemble, consisting of professional and amateur musicians of all ages and abilities from the Albany region, is led by director Sue Findlay who said she took on the role eight years ago.

“We’ve had many memorable performances including the Grand Opening of the AEC, No Strings Attached, A Family Christmas Concert and G’day Australia are among our hugely popular variety concerts that have thrilled audiences at the AEC,” she said.

In 2014 the ACWE took 70 musicians, singers and dancers on the road and wowed Esperance with their performance of Velocity and each year, hundreds of children aged 3-8 get up close with the band and some crazy characters when ACWE presents their annual Cushion Concert for Kids.

The Seniors Christmas Concert and YouthCARE concerts are also regular events on ACWE’s calendar.

From action movie soundtracks to romance Broadway hits and jazz favourites, the AWCE will be rolling out the red carpet in celebration of the very best of showbiz for their upcoming concert.

The ensemble will also be joined by the About Face Youth Choir to present a concert of glitz, glamour and sophistication with favourites from movies such as James Bond, Apollo 13 and other Hollywood Blockbusters.

Findlay said the entertaining concert will appeal to the whole family and with films and cartoons to shoes and musical memories there will be something for everyone.

“In true ACWE fashion, Stage, Screen and All that Jazz will appeal to the entire family and the audience can expect a fun-filled concert full of glitz, glamour, surprises and superb music from film, stage and cartoons,” she said.

“Guest vocalists Rachael Theyer and James Turner will sing a number from West Side Story accompanied by the 40-piece band and James Bond, the Pink Panther, Frank Sinatra and Road Runner will all make appearances both on the screen and in the flesh.”

“ACWE loves to entertain, so the audience should be prepared for an interactive night of fun and high-quality performances.”
