Fifty years to celebrate at Mt Barker college

Mt Barker Community College will mark its 50th anniversary with a celebration for all members of the community this weekend.

The festivities will kick off tomorrow and run into Saturday, with a number of activities and events to promote the school and highlight its rich history.

A meet-and-greet will be held on Friday with current staff, former teachers and principals from the college’s early days.

Tours will be held each hour, guided by student councillors and prefects.

On Saturday, current graduating pupils will team up with students from the class of 1962 to plant 50 trees on the school grounds.

Principal Jonathon Hoskin said it was a great idea to include everyone in the school college community.

“We have such a diverse range of people involved, it’s just terrific,” he said.

The college has enlisted the help of local gourmet caterers to provide a long-table lunch for visitors in the school canteen, and there will be a barbecue for the children.

“On Friday night we’re hosting a retro-disco with all the classic hits from the ‘60s,” Mr Hoskin said.

Each student has been asked to provide artwork to display during the weekend.

“Some of the work being produced by the students is truly magnificent,” he said.

Mt Barker Community College was established in 1962.

A staff honour wall will be erected to pay tribute to those who have worked at the school for 20 years or more, and to mark the 50-year celebration.
