Promising young talent Tom Baldwin was recognised as a star of the future for his outstanding performances playing with the Great Southern Storm at the Landmark Country Football Championships at the weekend.
Tom, who is originally from Jerramungup and plays for Royals in the Great Southern Football League, received the Clem Bray Medal for the best developing player in the colts division.
Playing as a small forward, the 15-year-old sat out the opening game of the championships before producing a brilliant match against Peel Cavaliers later on the first day.
Tom kicked three goals and had a hand in three others to play a leading role in the Storm’s come-from-behind victory.
He also kicked a goal in the grand final loss to South West Football League and was lively throughout the carnival, prompting coach Phil Gilbert to heap praise on the young star.
“You couldn’t coach a better young fella,” he said.
“He’s a sponge of knowledge, he just wants to take his game as far as he can.
“His dedication and commitment to becoming a better player is really impressive.”
Meanwhile Gilbert was joined by players Jake Becroft, Beau Ewen, Declan McNamara, Mitch Lenegan and Hamish McMorran by being named in the 2016 CBH Group Colts All Stars.
The five were all outstanding across the five games while Gilbert was named joint coach alongside SWFL’s Brett Maguire.
Meanwhile rebounding defender Ben Gray was the sole GSFL player named in the 2016 Landmark Country All Stars after his side won only one game at the championships. Gray was terrific at half-back with his regular run and carry and spoiling a highlight, backing up his selection in the team last year.
Ongerup Football Association ruckman Jayden Brooks was also selected in the team after he enjoyed another strong carnival.
Gray and Brooks will be strong chances to line up in the State Country side that will play South Australia at Adelaide Oval on July 31.
