He’s reached the lofty peak of a match-winning grand final goal, but West Coast midfielder Dom Sheed says his personal best is yet to come as he looks to rebound from a horror year.

An ankle injury sustained in the pre-season and a subsequent stress problem in his leg restricted Sheed to just one AFL appearance in 2022.

It was a tough blow for the 27-year-old to take in the prime of his career and coming off a career-best second in the 2021 John Worsfold Medal behind Nic Naitanui after averaging 26 disposals and five clearances.

Sheed is back fit and firing at pre-season training alongside his teammates and said before the injury he felt like he was continuing to reach new levels.

“I’m in my 10th year at the club now so I’m one of the older boys, so hopefully I can get back to that sort of form I was in a couple of years ago, but also improve as well and get even better,” he said.

“If you’re not striving to get better and take your game to the next level then you’re wasting your time being here, so I’m going to do everything I can to get fit and healthy and be the best possible teammate I can be.”

West Coast’s entire squad was on the training track for the first time on Monday, including new eastern states draftees Harry Barnett, Noah Long and Coby Burgiel.

Sheed said it was an exciting time at the Eagles with the addition of top-end talent through the draft.

“We’ve got a lot of young blokes who played a lot of footy last year and then we’ve picked up some new talent as well so providing everyone stays fit and healthy, it will be an exciting year for us,” Sheed said.

“Our No.1 goal this year will be to start off getting everyone fit and healthy and we’ll see what happens from there.”

Sheed’s premiership teammate Elliot Yeo is still training away from the main group as he recovers from another ankle soft tissue injury, adding to a frustrating few seasons for the dual All-Australian.

“He’s back up and running at the moment, with him he obviously hasn’t had the continuity over the past three or so years so we’ll take it a little bit slower with him,” Sheed said.

“It’s only December at the moment, so we’ll back our strength and conditioning staff to get him right.”
