West Coast co-captain Liam Duggan says the directness interim coach Jarrad Schofield has brought to the club has been welcomed as the Eagles lick their wounds from their weekend thrashing.

Andrew Gaff’s farewell game and Jamie Cripps’ 250th match were ruined by an undermanned Carlton side on Sunday, and Schofield was blunt in his assessment post-game.

Schofield said players had failed to play their roles in the 65-point drubbing and called for accountability.

“We gave tasks to individuals, and they didn’t follow. And when you give a task to someone, and they don’t execute their role, well then, you’re searching for other players to step up into that space that really shouldn’t have had to,” Schofield said.

Duggan, who said they had let more than just Gaff, Cripps and Schofield down with their performance, said the coach’s comments were not aimed at any players specifically.

“The roles that Jarrad alluded to were probably more in how individuals play within the team structure and philosophy and just not being able to execute the role that you’re playing at the time,” he said.

“It wasn’t on a certain player, but it was on certain roles and at certain times in our team structure and what we’re going after.

“He certainly wasn’t throwing the book with anyone, but we’re in a space of learning still and we’re trying to progress and move forward.”

Duggan said he liked the honesty Schofield had brought into the role and stressed his reviews were always group-first.

“Schoey is direct and honest, and that’s what we love about him. He made a name for himself at Subiaco that way and and certainly he’s put his own flavor on things since he’s taken over the role,” he said.

“We all appreciate how direct and honest he is, because you know where you stand and what you need to improve on and what you did well through the game as well.

“He’s not just all doom and gloom, even on weekends like that.”

Schofield told 7NEWS on Monday he expected Tom Barrass to make their trip to Geelong this weekend amid speculation of an off-season move to Hawthorn, and Duggan said he hoped the key defender would remain in Perth beyond this year.

“I’d love to see him out there this week and finish the year off strong with us, but certainly moving to the future, he’s a contracted player for us, a great mate of mine, a great leader of the footy club, a great man,” he said.

“We would love to have him around. We love playing with him, we’d love him to be there.”

Duggan has never won a game in Geelong, and the Eagles have won just one of their last 15 at GMHBA Stadium, which has included losses of 44, 58, 97, 92 and 85 points.

The 27 year-old said he was not daunted by their record in Geelong and while it was a massive challenge, they could not afford to focus on their abject run of results at the venue.

“We proved that against the Kangaroos — Hobart hasn’t been happy hunting ground for us either, and we were able, against the tide, to turn that game around after half time, and we’ll take confidence from that,” he said.

“We won’t be focusing a lot on where we’re playing; we’ll focus on who we’re playing, but a lot of our focus will be about what we’re doing, and what we want to see out of the four quarters.”
