VideoThe Port Adelaide mentor has emerged as a contender to join the Eagles.

Josh Carr has ruled himself out of contention to take West Coast’s vacant coaching role, with the Port Adelaide assistant saying he remains committed to staying in South Australia.

Carr was touted to be among the top contenders to replace Adam Simpson, having served as an assistant at both Fremantle and the Power.

The 2004 premiership star is highly rated among the current assistant coaches in the league and has long been seen as Hinkley’s successor at the Power.

At a press conference on Monday, Carr said he had not had any conversations with West Coast.

“No not at all,” he said when asked by reporters.

“I’ve been really clear form about this time last year that I’m here to stay in Adelaide, not moving away from Adelaide anytime soon.

Carr also said he would not be drawn into any speculation surrounding the Eagles viewing Hinkley as a potential replacement for Simpson.

“I think you’ve probably just got to look at the source first,” he said of talk around Hinkley being a candidate.

“I think we all know what the industry likes, we’re fully aware of how that works, me and Ken and all of us have discussions of how we can be better coaches.”

Carr is the second high-profile candidate to publicly turn down interest in taking over the Eagles following club legend Dean Cox’s recommitment to Sydney last Friday.

“I am extremely happy in Sydney, and I believe this is the best place for me and my family at the moment,” Cox said.

“Its such a good working environment at the Swans, we feel we have built a strong list at the club and we have got a good foundation for success.

“I’m really comfortable with the role I have at the club under John (Longmire).”
