GSSA 2024: Rovers snag crucial victory in men’s division one, Denmark survive scare in women’s division one

Rovers secured a vital three points to remain in striking distance of ladder leaders Caledonians in round 11 of the Great Southern Soccer Association men’s division one on Saturday night. Joseph Iaruel and Justin Bielecki each netted a goal in Rovers’ 2-0 victory over Polonia, keeping them in second and one point adrift of Caledonians who claimed a strong 6-1 victory over Bayswater. Caledonians were sublime from the kick-off with four first-half goals before adding another two in the second. Nathan Kay and Gury Shaw each converted a brace for Caledonians while James Opuni scored a consolation goal for Bayswater. Phoenix won courtesy of a forfeit from the winless Stirling Rangers. In the women’s division one, Denmark were forced to overcome a spirited Phoenix side to keep their perfect season intact on Friday night. Denmark had won every game so far this season, but faced their toughest challenge yet in their 2-1 victory over Phoenix on Friday night. Lumeah Masih and Stella Gleeson each found the net in the win, maintaining their 10-point lead at the top of the ladder. Caledonians overcame Polonia 2-0 with goals from Kayla Stoney and Stephanie Grant, while Rovers and Mt Barker ended their match in a 0-0 draw. Rovers Back and Polonia tied 3-3 in their men’s division two encounter on Saturday, while Caledonians notched a 2-1 victory and Phoenix defeated Rovers Gold 5-3. The women’s division three saw Phoenix stroll to a dominant 9-0 victory over Bayswater on Friday evening while Caledonians beat Sharks 5-1 and Mt Barker handed Rovers a 3-0 defeat.
