Fremantle Dockers list manager David Walls says club is expecting Joel Hamling to decide future today

Fremantle is expecting defender Joel Hamling to make a call on his future today. The Western Bulldogs premiership player is mulling over a one-year contract with Fremantle and multi-year offers from elsewhere, including Sydney. He played just four games for the Dockers this season, spending the bulk of the year with Peel Thunder. With the free-agency period to open tomorrow, Walls said he had spoken to Hamling’s manager Colin Young on Wednesday night and believed a call was looming on Thursday. “I heard from his manager Colin Young last night, so he said we will have an answer today,” Walls told SEN. “He’s got a bit to work through, we’ve got an offer on the table for him, we would love Joel to continue his footy with us, but he has got a few things to weigh up and look at and see if he can find extra security and also opportunity as well. “He has played a fair bit of footy down at Peel the last two years, so I think he’s just looking at all his options. “I think ideally he would like to stay at Fremantle, but he needs to look at what’s out there, based on what’s gone on in the last couple of years.” Walls also revealed no clubs had come knocking for out-of-favour midfielder Will Brodie. The former Gold Coast player has three years remaining on his deal at the Dockers, but after a break-out season in 2022, played just five times this year. “There hasn’t (been any calls on Brodie). We still expect Will to play a lot of footy for us in those next three years and I think it’s an important summer for him,” Walls said. “He obviously had a big first year with us and then came back in pre-season two — few pre-seasons, few interruptions — and I think he is a player that needs a full pre-season. “He’ll have his break, but he’ll come back in really good shape, big summer and I’m sure he’ll be back in the team next year.” Walls doubled down on his belief that ruckman Sean Darcy will “definitely” be at the club next season.
