Former Fremantle Docker Tom North heads east in search of second AFL chance, set to join Carlton’s VFL side

Former Fremantle midfielder Tom North is set to sign for Carlton’s VFL side as he chases an AFL lifeline. North, pick 65 in the 2017 national draft, was cut by the Dockers after three seasons on their list without playing a senior game. The left-footed midfielder was impressive at WAFL level for Fremantle’s affiliate Peel Thunder, averaging a touch under 20 possessions, four tackles, four marks and booting five goals in 28 matches across two seasons. He was an emergency several times but found himself behind Rising Star winner Caleb Serong, Darcy Tucker, Mitch Crowden and top-five picks Andrew Brayshaw and Adam Cerra in the pecking order. The Eastern Ranges product was expected to remain in WA at one point with West Coast’s WAFL side and South Fremantle leading the race for his services. But he will move back to his home State of Victoria on Monday after jumping at the chance to feature in the Blues’ VFL team in the newly-rebranded east coast second-tier competition. The 21-year-old saw that as a better opportunity to get back into the AFL.
