Perth Thundersticks goal-keeper Aleisha Power had to overcome a cruel run of injury pain to produce one of the most important performances in Western Australia’s hockey history.

Power missed all of last season after rupturing her ankle, but then injured her calf and then her hamstring in a year of injury hell.

On Sunday, the shot-stopper produced a player-of-the-match performance in the club’s maiden Hockey One grand final victory, which included a stunning double save off a short corner with the game on the line.

Perth completed an undefeated season with the 4-1 win over Brisbane Blaze in Hobart, the club’s first title since the tournament was revamped.

“It was a pretty cool experience for us girls as a team and for Hockey WA and pretty special for me individually after a bit of a hard year to come out and really enjoy hockey and put a performance down that I was proud of,” Power told The West Australian.

“It’s so funny I actually had a shocking warm-up. I was like, this could either go really well or really s...t and I sort of pulled myself together and focused on doing my best for the team.

“It all came together and I was kind of in the zone.”

Power was ruled out of the entire Hockey One season last year. Shortly after removing a moon boot, she tore her calf during rehabilitation.

The long-time Australian back-up didn’t play hockey again until March.

“It was definitely challenging, but I would say I am a pretty positive person most of the time,” Power said.

“I definitely missed playing Hockey One last year and had a lot of big moments when the girls were playing. It is really hard and I definitely struggled through it, but I just wanted to play hockey and kept that at the forefront of my mind.”

Dutch legend Eva Drummond, who starred for the Thundersticks in her first season playing in Australia, said Power’s performances

“If you have got a goalie that performs really well, is truly an amazing person and an amazing goalie, it really gives you the belief as a team that no matter what happens at the back, you have always got that extra security net behind you,” she said.

“She played incredibly well yesterday. She made some incredible saves and really kept us in the game.”
