Sheffield Shield: West Australian quick Jhye Richardson managed for clash with New South Wales at SCG

West Australian quick Jhye Richardson has his eye on Perth Scorchers’ campaign and is being managed out of a Sheffield Shield match against New South Wales from Friday. Richardson has been parked from the clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground, WA’s final four-day match of the year, a week after returning to long-form cricket for the first time this season. The tearaway had still been bowling restricted loads under a tight-leash program managed by Cricket Australia. Lance Morris will play in the match after he was jumped by Sean Abbott and Brendan Doggett into the Test squad while also on restricted loads. Richardson’s return to red-ball cricket had been ahead of schedule and his focus for the summer was always set to be trained mostly on white-ball cricket. The paceman sent shockwaves through WA cricket when he went down clutching his troublesome shoulder after celebrating a wicket in the draw with South Australia, but bowled on later that day. He is now expected to lead the Scorchers’ attack in their season-opener against Melbourne Stars on December 15. There are no more shield games before Australia begin its final Test of the summer — the second match against Sri Lanka in Galle — meaning the next time WA’s pace duo will bowl red-ball loads is likely to be February. As reported by The West Australian, Scorchers captain and WA batter Ashton Turner has suffered a side strain and will miss the clash. A timeline on his recovery for the Big Bash League is still being worked through. Sam Whiteman will return and captain the side after recovering from a month-long side strain of his own to score a century for Fremantle at the weekend. And WA will weigh up unleashing two slow bowlers on the spin-friendly SCG, with left-arm wrist-spinner Hamish McKenzie available for the first time after battling stress fractures in his back. He could partner Corey Rocchiccioli, who will bowl with the red ball for the final time before the Sri Lanka tour. The tall off-spinner has long been touted for a spot on that plane and spent time working with Australian bowling coach and former New Zealand spinner Dan Vettori this summer. Brody Couch, the former Victorian discard who shot into WA’s team and briefly led the competition’s wicket-taking, will return to face the Blues, while Teague Wyllie has been dropped. After a week of furore over his selection for their defeat to Tasmania, unlikely Test hopeful Adam Zampa will not face WA. Zampa was parachuted into the side that lost to the Tigers at the SCG as he ramped up a bid to make a shock Test debut. The leg-spinner indicated this week national selection chair George Bailey had told him he would be in the mix, but NSW officials and Cricket Australia have been at loggerheads over the call. Selector and board member Stuart Clark broke ranks when he claimed in a radio interview the committee had been told they must select Zampa.
