You would think that after 376 games in the AFL, at 38-years-old, David Mundy would be done chasing football fairytales.

Apparently that’s not the case.

The Fremantle legend ran out for his hometown Seymour Lions at the weekend for the first time in almost two decades as part of a plan to finish his football career where it began - and hopefully with a premiership.

Suiting up in the Goulburn Valley League fixture against the Kyabram Bombers, Mundy started out on the ball before swinging forward - ending the game with 19 disposals, five clearances and two goals.

His goals came in a three-minute burst in the third term which sparked life into the Lions and began a comeback for the ages.

At one point trailing by 47 points, the Lions orchestrated what looked like one of the great comebacks in country football.

However the push fell just short, with Kyabram taking the win 86-80 at the final siren.

Speaking to the Shepparton News, Mundy said he was happy with his output off an interesting preparation.

“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind trip with the red-eye flight and only a few hours’ sleep,” Mundy said.

“I think I’ve pulled it off well. I was at least able to walk at the end of the day.

“I was there to play my role and get some feedback, but I was able to slot into a nice midfield unit.”

Mundy, who qualifies as a one-point player given Seymour is his junior club, is attempting to return several times this season with a view to qualifying for finals.

His hopes of a dream finish will also rely on Seymour rallying after a tough start to the season - the Kyabram loss sees them sitting 10th on the ladder with a 1-4 record, three games outside the top six.

Saturday’s match was Mundy’s third since retiring from the AFL at the end of season 2022.

He made one appearance each for country Victoria’s Carngham Linton and the South West Football League’s Dunsborough Sharks last year.
