AFL Draft: Every WA player picked
Four players were snared from WAFL ranks in Monday’s AFL mid-season draft, with Josh Deluca heading the pack after being selected by Carlton with pick one.
Fremantle had to wait until pick 11 before recruiting colts forward Dylan O’Reilly, while South Fremantle star Marlion Pickett was drafted by Richmond with pick 13, despite suffering a broken finger in the WAFL at the weekend that is expected to sideline him for six weeks.
St Kilda opted for youth when selecting 19-year-old Subiaco colts forward Jack Mayo, while former Docker Cam Sutcliffe earned another chance at the top level with pick nine.
The fortunate four came from a group of 62 WA-based players who nominated for the mid-season draft, including nine from Subiaco and Claremont respectively.
Claremont’s dual Sandover medallist Jye Bolton was overlooked, with former Fremantle rookie Haiden Schloithe also missing out on a mid-season chance.
Pick 1: Josh Deluca (Carlton)
WAFL club: Subiaco
Position: Midfielder
Games: 80
Age: 23
Height: 179cm
Weight: 80kg
Previous AFL experience: Fremantle (four games)
What they said: “Josh can play inside and outside and also small forward. He complements our group from an age demographic, but he’s also got some scope (to improve). He’s not just a now pick. We can see him really progressing and developing with our team.” - Carlton list manager Michael Agresta
Pick 8: Jack Mayo (St Kilda)
WAFL club: Subiaco
Position: Forward
Games: 2
Age: 19
Height: 192cm
Weight: 81kg
Previous AFL experience: Nil
What they said: “Jack’s still a developing player. He kicked 50 goals last year in the colts so we’ve tracked a fair way through. He put on six or seven kilos and Subiaco have been a really strong team, so it’s hard for those 19-year-olds to come in and play straight away.” - St Kilda recruiting manager Chris Liberatore
Pick 11: Dillon O’Reilly (Fremantle)
WAFL club: East Fremantle
Position: Defender
Games: 4
Age: 18
Height: 193cm
Weight: 79kg
Previous AFL experience: Nil
What they said: “He was certainly someone we were monitoring closely. What we liked about him is he’s played a lot of footy as a key forward, he’s 194cm tall, he’s played a little bit as a defender as well. He’s got a bit of power about him as well and he’s going to work hard.” - Fremantle football manager Peter Bell
Pick 13: Marlion Pickett (Richmond)
WAFL club: South Fremantle
Position: Midfielder
Games: 97
Age: 27
Height: 184cm
Weight: 84kg
Previous AFL experience: None
What they said: “I don’t think there’s any concerns from us about the finger. Being a long term selection, we think it’s an opportunity to get Marlion in now. We’ve liked his talent for a number of years. The injury will set him back from training but we think long-term he’ll be good for us.” - Richmond national recruiting manager Matthew Clarke
