Josh Kelly’s next contract may prove to be less of a talking point than first thought, with Greater Western Sydney coach Leon Cameron hinting an extension may already be in sight.

The star midfielder is going into the final season of a two-year deal he signed in 2017. The deal was struck despite an offer from North Melbourne which would have rivalled Lance Franklin’s as the most lucrative in the game.

Kelly waited until September the last time he re-signed with the Giant, but Cameron said discussions are progressing far more rapidly this time around.

“We feel as though it's really progressing well. Probably a far bit quicker than what it was a couple of years ago, because we've had some really good dialogue,” Cameron, who discussed the topic with Kelly during a coffee catch-up, told SEN.

“His manager’s been fantastic in Paul Connors, and so we feel as though we’re in a really good space and I think it’s going to start heating up.

“Ideally every club wants your players like Josh Kelly signed up before the season starts, and we’re mindful the player also wants to take his time as well.

“Two years ago, it took until probably two-thirds of the way through the year, but hopefully from my point of view, from a selfish point of view, we can get it done before the season starts, but I’m also mindful there’s another party and that’s Josh as well.

“The one good thing I will say is that the conversations are easy, if you know what I mean. They’re very easy to have.

“At the end of the day all I’m worried about is Josh Kelly staying at the Giants.”

Kelly, 23, struggled through injury last season backing up off a year when he was named All-Australia and won the Kevin Sheed Medal as Giants’ best and fairest.
