Joe Spagnolo: Why the homecoming of Mathias Cormann should lead to some heated questions about the Liberals

The imminent homecoming of Mathias Cormann is raising eyebrows around Perth. Given his usual attention to detail, the timing of his return to WA — his first major visit since becoming secretary-general of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development — is perplexing. Why would he come home, even for a short while, just days before Liberal Party powerbrokers and warlords come under the microscope at the party’s WA State conference? Cormann is scheduled to address the Australia Israel Chamber of Commerce in Perth on July 21, and the WA Chamber of Commerce and Industry on July 27, three days before State conference. Given he’s working hard to forge a new life overseas as head of the OECD, there is no way he would want his visit to Perth to be tainted by discussions about his past as a powerbroker. But given the timing, discussions about his past are inevitable. There is resentment among some Liberals that while Cormann’s star continues to shine after a successful career in Federal politics, the sparkle isn’t there for all of them. Cormann’s career as an Australian politician had two main facets — as a former WA Liberal Senator and Federal finance minister. When Australia’s longest-serving finance minister made his final appearance in the Senate in 2020, he got a lengthy standing ovation. But it was Cormann’s role as an expert negotiator and a behind-the-scenes powerbroker, with significant influence in WA and Canberra, which was not so obvious. You occasionally saw glimpses of that influence. The maiden speeches of a number of current and former WA Federal politicians, including Ben Morton, Andrew Hastie, Michaelia Cash, Ian Goodenough, Celia Hammond, Slade Brockman and Ben Small, paid homage to Cormann. “I would like to thank Mathias Cormann, who set this train in motion. You took the first risk and backed me,” Hastie said in his. And in the removal of a prime minister in 2018, Cormann was the one who told Malcolm Turnbull on August 22 that he no longer enjoyed the support of the majority of the Federal Liberal caucus. But it was the leaking of damaging text messages between WA Liberals and Cormann in August 2021 that gave the public the most significant insights into the shadowy world of warlords and powerbrokers, and the influence they had in preselections and political careers. Calling themselves The Clan, Cormann and his other good mate, WA Liberal MP Peter Collier — followed by another WA Liberal, Nick Goiran — gloated about their influence and power. In one text message in 2019, Cormann bragged about Clan wins. “Team, tomorrow we will get 100 per cent of our candidates up uncontested for all positions, including all four State VPs,” he wrote. “That’s a great demonstration of the strength of our support from across the WA Liberal Party after years of hard work as a team.” The text messages reaffirmed what many had suspected — that the WA Liberal Party was controlled by a select few who had an unhealthy influence over preselections and candidates. In the face of devastating election losses both at State and Federal levels, and questions over whether the right candidates are being preselected, this influence is now under the microscope. But while Goiran and Collier, who remain in the WA Parliament, have to face the music from anti-Clan Liberals, Cormann has had the luxury of evading scrutiny because he now lives in France and travels the world as OECD boss. Even allies of The Clan are bemused at Cormann’s good fortune in avoiding closer attention to his days as a powerbroker. “The bread always lands butter side up for Mathias,” a Liberal source said.
