Titans rise to topple gallant Alcos

It was the Titans who conquered in the men's premier league volleyball grand final last Wednesday night, but the Alcos gave them a run for their money.

The curtain closed on yet another thrilling Albany Volleyball Association indoor hardcourt season, with Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre hosting finals in men's, women's and mixed grades.

The men's final capped off the evening's games, with a good crowd witness to a thrilling match.

Titans star Nick Bew signalled the team's intentions early with a punishing cross-court spike to win the opening point of the game, the side getting out to an early 6-2 advantage.

However, Alcos settled and nudged in front before Bew and Matt Goodall combined for some power-hitting at the net to give Titans a five-point lead, 17-12, before taking out the first set 25-19.

It was déjÀ vu in the second set with Bew again getting the opening point with another strong spike, but this time there was no run-on of points, both teams trading blows and defending gallantly.

Alcos managed to wrestle a three-point lead at several stages through the middle and latter part of the set, but could not hang on, with Titans taking five of the last six points to win the set 25-22 and take a two-set advantage.

At the change of ends, Alcos regrouped and took the fight up to Titans, taking the third set 25-27.

Despite Alcos' best efforts to get back into the match, Titans overran their brave opposition in the fourth set 25-14 to win their first men's premiership.

Defending women's premiers Old Chooks were triumphant again, winning the women's premier league title in straight sets over Prophettes, 25-23, 25-19, 25-12.

The grand finals evening began with the match to decide the mixed premiers, with Show us Your Sets taking on Bohica.

Association president Aaron Bailey starred with some powerful spiking for Show us Your Sets, helping them take the premiership in straight sets, 25-21, 25-10.
