The rumble of engines filled the streets of Albany as hundreds of drivers from around Australia tested their racing skills in the annual Albany Classic Motor Event on Sunday.

Drivers came from as far as Victoria to compete with their classic cars in what is one of Albany's biggest drawcards of the year.

Event organiser Phil Shepherd said he estimated about 15,000 people came to watch the thrilling action and satisfy their need for speed.

"The gate takings were up this year, so that is obviously a positive," he said. "I met a lot of first-time visitors as well."

Local driver Gary Cutler competed in the Classic Sports Cars category with his Porsche 911.

He said he enjoyed competing at home and it was a fun course to drive, the closest similar track being Collie.

Perth driver Les Cerco said he also loved driving his EH Holden through the winding streets of Albany.

"It's a good fun event and it's great to be in Albany," he said.

Chris Bothams from Perth was racing for the fourth time in Albany with his Datsun 260Z.

"I'm very happy with my times," Mr Bothams said.

"The main thing is we have a lot of fun here and I want to thank the people of Albany for letting us use their streets."

While an accident delayed some of the day's events, all the drivers were OK and the volunteers quickly reset the concrete barriers so the accelerating action could carry on.

One of the highlights of the day was the weather, with Albany turning on splendid sunshine for the last day of autumn.
