A year after a long-running agricultural group feared it would be forced to fold, a fresh-faced team won second prize at the Perth Royal Show on Sunday.

Albany's Melita Smith, Katanning's Rosalie Baxter and Wagin's Fiona Dawson kept the Great Southern District Display tradition going this year after many former members retired.

The trio signed up at last year's show and impressed judges with their Hauling the Great Southern-themed display, which featured a truck centrepiece by Albany metal sculptor Lance Reid, among an assortment of other produce. Mrs Smith, 26, said the display took a year to plan, a fortnight travelling 5000km to collect donated items and a week to assemble.

She said the truck, which has working headlights, indicators and horn, was popular among show-goers, and the experience was rewarding.

"I enjoy teaching people about farming," Mrs Smith said.

"I have learnt a lot along the way myself."

Mrs Smith said the new recruits were encouraged by the result and had started planning next year's display.

"We feel very privileged and think it was a fantastic result for a team of mostly first timers," she said.
