Prince of Wales visit sets city abuzz
The public will have various opportunities to be part of this weekend's historic royal visit as the city's special guests experience a true taste of regional Australian life in Albany on Saturday.
It has been confirmed the Prince of Wales and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, will appear at the annual Albany Agricultural Show, where they will view a log-chopping demonstration and meet and greet local farmers and community members.
Albany Agricultural Society president Rob Wright said it was a great honour to be able to host the couple.
"The fact they want to come to the show is marvellous," he said.
"It's a great highlighter of the importance of the agricultural show and the role it plays by bringing rural country and urban people together.
"It's a chance for us to showcase Albany and its ordinary, general people."
Albany Mayor Dennis Wellington has encouraged the community to be part of the historic visit and give the pair a warm welcome by lining the streets of the Albany CBD, where they will catch a glimpse of the couple as their motorcade travels to Mt Adelaide, to the National Anzac Centre.
At Mt Adelaide, the Prince and Duchess will mark the centenary of the Gallipoli landings by viewing the point from which the Anzacs departed Australia for World War I.
Mr Wellington said there would be an opportunity for the public to see the heir to the throne and Camilla at viewing areas at Mt Adelaide.
He said NAC opening times would be adjusted to allow for the visit, and parking would be closed at the Apex Drive lower carpark on the day, with shuttle buses running to the top of Mt Adelaide.
He said the tour of the NAC was a great opportunity for the Prince and Camilla to learn more about Australia's most iconic story.
Albany police Senior Sergeant Quentin Flatman said there would be an increased police presence in Albany at the weekend, including police motorbikes and mounted police, who will assist the Prince and Camilla to arrive safely at their venues.
The couple will depart Albany Airport on Saturday afternoon for Perth, for a celebratory function to mark the Prince's 67th birthday, which will be hosted by Premier Colin Barnett at Cottesloe Civic Centre.
