New website to help get food from farm to plate
The Great Southern community will soon have direct access to fresh local produce thanks to a new initiative which will connect local growers and producers with consumers.
Albany Local Produce is an online shopping site which will allow shoppers to select and buy local products and have them delivered to their door.
Founder Coby Lane said the idea was not only about convenience for growers and consumers, but also about community sustainability and supporting local farmers.
"All the money you spend at Coles and (Woolworths) goes to shareholders, whereas all the money you spend in this sort of business stays in the community," he said.
"It's basically to keep the money in the community rather than go to big corporate conglomerates."
Shipley's Farm owner Mike Shipley, who will be one of the local businesses featured, said the website will assist in expanding local growers markets.
"It's giving producers and consumers the opportunity to get together and source wonderful local produce," he said.
"All it is, is an opportunity for local people to source good local produce at a great price and not have huge distances travelled between when it is grown and when it is sold to the public."
