New Year's Eve revellers heading to two popular beaches will be met with a heightened police presence today.

Walpole and Jerramungup police expect thousands to descend on Peaceful Bay and Bremer Bay to welcome the new year.

Jerramungup officer-in-charge Sergeant Steve Evans expects Bremer Bay's population to more than double from about 500 to 1100 people during the town's biggest event of the year.

Sgt Evans said about 8000 visitors flocked to the popular spot between Boxing Day and Saturday, and they will find an increased police presence.

Nine police officers from Albany and Katanning will join patrols today, with two Narrogin officers supporting Jerramungup police this week.

"We don't want to be the fun police, but we want to make sure everyone is safe and sound," Sgt Evans said. "We will be patrolling the town and surrounding beaches to ensure behaviour is good and (have) a no-tolerance approach to alcohol-related offences and street drinking."

Sgt Evans said there were no arrests during last year's operation and only a few drink-driving charges on New Year's Day.

"Generally, we get a really good family-friendly crowd and hope to continue that this year," he said.

Walpole officer-in-charge Sergeant David Wall expects up to 2000 people at Peaceful Bay this week.

Sgt Wall said officers would clamp down on antisocial behaviour and underage and street drinking, while Shire of Denmark rangers would enforce camping laws.

There will be a roadblock on Peaceful Bay Road and all cars will be searched for alcohol and drugs.

"We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable time, but not at the expense of others," Sgt Wall said.

"It's called Peaceful Bay for a reason - it's a family-friendly environment."

Sgt Wall said the majority of last year's visitors were well behaved.

"A lot of people were detected for street drinking and I would hope to see a reduction in that," he said.
