An unstaffed Forrestfield service station has been officially declared Perth’s motorist mecca — home of the city’s cheapest petrol in 2021.

FastFuel 24/7 regained the title it held in 2018 and 2019 by selling at an average price of 131.8¢ a litre amid record-high bowser costs for motorists across the city, FuelWatch has revealed.

Vibe Morley and Liberty Calista were the second and third most affordable petrol retailers respectively.

Members-only service station Costco, at Perth Airport, offered a lower average price at 127.2¢ a litre but offset this with an annual $60 membership fee for its customers.

Consumer Protection Commissioner Gary Newcombe said 2021 had been a challenging year for motorists battling a volatile fuel market. Prices were 26¢ a litre more expensive on average this year compared with 2020.

“Apart from the record high fuel prices this year, Perth motorists had to contend with a shift in the price cycle from weekly to fortnightly, making it even more difficult to save money on what is a major expense in the family budget,” Mr Newcombe said.

“It is commendable that FastFuel 24/7 in Forrestfield not only consistently offered the cheapest prices throughout much of the year, but did it without taking part in the petrol price cycle.

“From January to mid-November, Perth ULP prices rose by a whopping 41 per cent due to increases in international prices as the world began to open up after COVID-19 lockdowns and fuel supply struggled to meet the growth in demand.

“In the last eight weeks, however, international prices have trended downwards with outbreaks of COVID-19 and the emergence of the Omicron variant forcing further lockdowns and travel restrictions. This has resulted in local fuel prices falling.”

Perth hit its all-time average bowser high on November 3 and 17 — of 182.4¢ a litre. Better Choice Stratton set the all-time daily record on November 3, slugging motorists 196.9¢ a litre.

BP South Fremantle was named Perth’s most expensive fuel outlet. The West Australian last week revealed service station petrol margins have soared 25 per cent since the fortnightly fuel cycle was introduced.
