Firefighters raise $11,000 for Esperance fire victims

Albany's firefighters turned tin rattlers on Saturday, rallying for the Esperance bushfire victims.

Volunteers from the City of Albany's bushfire brigades as well as fire and rescue brigades threw their support behind the Esperance Fire Appeal, which was activated late last week through the Lord Mayor's Distress Relief Fund.

More than $11,000 was raised in four hours on Saturday morning as crews from the South Coast and Kalgan bushfire brigades with assistance from Highway and King River brigades left to help suppress the Esperance fires on Friday.

City of Albany emergency management team leader Garry Turner said the local community was generous in their support and the fundraising effort would be ongoing with tins at the City offices, Albany Public Library, National Anzac Centre, ALAC and Albany Visitor Centre.

Volunteers were stationed in the city centre at the Town Square, Albany Farmers Markets, Bunnings, Albany Plaza, Dog Rock and Brooks Garden shopping centres from 8am to noon on Saturday.

"Every volunteer was blown away by the generosity of the Albany community," Mr Turner said.

"There were a lot of young people giving up their pocket money and we had donations right through the entire spectrum of age groups - they knew exactly what it was all about. It was certainly very heart-warming."

He said volunteers were ready to assist if and when they were called.
