Gun midfielder Matt Orzel completed a successful homecoming to North Albany, winning a premiership medallion along with the Alan Barnett Medal - awarded to the best player in the Great Southern Football League grand final on Sunday afternoon.

Orzel returned to his original club after retiring from the WAFL last year where he played 156 league games for Claremont and Peel Thunder.

In a typical Orzel performance the 30-year-old racked up 30 possessions in the 2015 decider with the majority those contested.

He had 10 important disposals in the first quarter to help arrest back the momentum from Railways who kicked the first four goals of the match.

In the last quarter Orzel stood up when his side most needed him, gathering eight disposals and a number of crucial clearances in neutral territory.

His efforts made him a narrow winner of the medal ahead of spearhead Daniel Parker, who booted six goals in a telling display up forward.

Now settled in back in Albany with his wife Olivia and three daughters, Orzel said this season was all about enjoying the game.

"For me this season was all about enjoyment," Orzel said.

"Coming back and playing with some of my best mates.

"The boys have worked really hard and even this week at training we never backed off.

"It is a really rewarding win."

Orzel was full of praise for his teammates after surviving the spirited Tigers challenge.

"We knew Railways play tough, hard footy and there is a good rivalry between us," he said.

"It was a fierce game, Railways are a good bunch of blokes and it's good to have a beer with them after.

"Today everyone did their job and a lot of other guys should or could have won this.

"I just went hard, grand finals are won on one percenters and just tried to give my all."

Having never won a league premiership, Orzel said that was a driving factor for him, along with the black armband he wore for the passing of his aunty Caroline.

"This is my first league grand final win, North Albany is where my hearts always been," Orzel said.

"I'm stoked for all our loyal supporters and it was good to send Mick (Mustey) off with a win."
