At the tender age of 20, Mt Barker woman Heather York has been appointed as a delegate on The Nationals WA State Executive, making her one of the party's youngest ever executive members.

Ms York was appointed to the position at the party's State Conference late last month and will now be part of the team responsible for its management.

The 20-year-old said she believed her young age would bring a fresh perspective to the decision-making process.

"What the younger component of the executive will bring is capturing a different demographic, that wouldn't necessarily happen if we weren't involved," she said.

"So talking about things like university deregulation - we are the people who are most prominently affected by issues like that.

"We are the first-homebuyers and we are the people who are getting into small business or having families, so that's what I think we can contribute."

Ms York, who also co-owns a small business in Mt Barker, said she would like to see the disconnect between regional and metropolitan areas improved.

"I'd like to bridge that gap a little bit … so regional kids have the same opportunities as metropolitan kids and regional farmers have the same marketing opportunities as metropolitan business people," she said.

According to State president James Hayward, the new State Executive has a median age of 37 years old.
