City of Albany deputy chief executive Garry Adams has resigned from his role to take up a new job at the City of Canning in Perth.

Mr Adams had been deputy chief executive and corporate services executive director since June 2012.

Albany chief executive Graham Foster said Mr Adams was a "fantastic deputy" and had made an invaluable contribution to the City.

"I would like to thank Garry for his many achievements and for consistently being such a well-liked and respected leader to staff," he said.

"I congratulate Garry on his new role, which is a great opportunity to further his career in a large metropolitan local government."

Mr Adams said he was proud to have had the opportunity to contribute to initiatives such as the Anzac Albany commemorations, improvements to infrastructure and the Centennial Park Sporting Precinct.

The City said recruitment for a new corporate services executive director would begin soon.

It is understood the decision to continue the deputy chief executive role would be up to the new chief executive Andrew Sharpe and may require a decision of council.

Mr Sharpe will assume as chief executive after Mr Foster departs on August 3.
