Chance of weekend snow on Stirling Range

Albany Advertiser

Snow could fall in the Stirling Range about an hour north of Albany this weekend.

Cold temperatures are forecast across the Great Southern on Saturday and Sunday and the Bureau of Meteorology is predicting snow could fall on the range.

Bluff Knoll, a popular destination for mountain climbers, is the range's highest peak at 3606ft and is one of only a few places in WA that experiences regular snow falls.

The peak usually receives a light snow fall at least once a year but it has been more than two decades since the last heavy fall, when 20cm of snow was recorded on October 2, 1992.

The most recent snow fall on Bluff Knoll was on August 16, 2013 when 5mm was recorded.

Albany resident and radio presenter Andrew Collins braved the chilly, wet conditions and climbed the mountain before dawn to catch a glimpse of the snow.

Steve Janicke and his son Luke experienced the snowfall in 1992.

"We made snowmen … the snow was something that I wanted to see since I was a teenager," Mr Janicke said.

Tomorrow, temperatures are expected to reach a low of 8 and a maximum of 13, with an 80 per cent chance of showers and the chance of a thunderstorm in the late afternoon or evening.

Possible afternoon and evening hail is also predicted, with a risk of snow over the ranges in the evening.

Sunday is expected to be colder, with a low of 1 and high of 12, 40 per cent chance of showers, most likely in the morning, with possible small hail.

There is a risk of snow over the ranges during the morning.
