A 21-year-old Mt Barker man who admitted to stealing a dual cab ute and injuring its owner has been jailed for two and a half years.

Samuel Donald Ford was sentenced in the Perth Supreme Court on Tuesday after a jury in December found him guilty of aggravated robbery and unlawful damage at a Myalup property in October 2014.

The jury could not be certain Ford was armed with a knife when he stole the car from the Myalup property while its owner slept nearby in a shed.

The court heard Ford was on an amphetamine "bender" when he stole the car from the man, who was injured attempting to stop him.

Ford was proved to have deliberately accelerated in reverse as the man grabbed hold of his arm, dragging him along the ground and causing cuts and abrasions to his arms and legs.

In sentencing, Judge Stephen Hall said while the offence was not planned or premeditated, there were threats of violence in an attempt to flee the scene and Ford has crashed the ute into the shed while reversing.

Judge Hall said prison was the only appropriate penalty option and Ford had showed no remorse.

Ford was made eligible for parole in 15 months.
