The City of Albany is on the path to becoming more efficient and environmentally friendly after the introduction of electric bikes for staff.

The initiative was inspired by a similar project implemented by local governments in Perth and aimed to give staff a faster and easier way to travel between work sites or events in the city.

After successfully using the bikes for the recent royal visit, travel smart officer Carl Beck said the City had received a flood of interest from staff also wanting to use them.

"They are great for small trips and it is a lot easier to find parking, and much safer," Mr Beck said.

"It's also part of the City's corporate plan to reduce the carbon footprint; the City already has a couple of electric cars so this is the next step forward."

Mr Beck said the City was keen to encourage cyclists and was always looking for initiatives, hence the Cycle City strategy.

"We are looking at mobile cycle parking facilities for major events such as the Christmas pageant, Australia Day or even swimming lessons at Emu Point," he said.

"Albany is taking a lead as a regional centre and we very much want to see ourselves as a leader in cycle tourism."
