Flights to and from Bali have been cancelled across Australia following multiple volcanic eruptions in Indonesia.

Jetstar and Virgin have grounded flights to and from Bali due to ash clouds from Indonesia’s Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki after it erupted multiple times over the last few days.

An AirAsia plane departed before 7pm but a flight scheduled to fly just before 8.30pm on Tuesday night has been delayed and two Wednesday morning flights have been cancelled.

Perth resident Christine Sutherland was advised by Jetstar via text that her flight was cancelled due to volcanic activity.

“We are a party of 20 people and all of our flights have been cancelled,” she said.

“We are trying to find accommodation for the night with room costs now going up by 40 per cent.

“We have rebooked our flight for Wednesday night so we hope we can leave.”

Multiple flights to the East Coast from the popular holiday destination have also been cancelled with volcanic ash plume rising up to 5500 metres altitude.

Travellers have been advised to contact the airline they are flying on if their flights have been cancelled.

A big eruption on Sunday by the volcano, which spewed ash nine kilometres in the air, killed nine people.

Since then, authorities have been scrambling to evacuate 16,000 people from villages nearest the crater as eruptions continue.
