Shekhar Dhanvijay revealed as triathlete who died after requiring medical attention in Busselton IRONMAN

The identity of the triathlete who died after requiring medical attention while competing in the 2024 Busselton IRONMAN has been revealed. Dr Shekhar Dhanvijay, 48, was competing in the annual event which includes a swim, cycle and run leg in a triathlon format. An obituary posted online said he was a senior consultant in intensive care medicine at Singapore’s Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and called him a “talented doctor, passionate teacher and well-respected fellow colleague”. “Rest in peace Dr Shekhar, knowing you have left an indelible mark on all of us and your patients,” it reads. Triathlon coaching group Elevate Performance Coaching also posted a tribute to Dr Dhanvijay on Facebook. “He will be remembered for his kind and gentle nature, always showing up with a smile,” it reads. “Shekhar passed away doing what he loved, surrounded by his loved ones and teammates.” While not confirming Dr Dhanvijay’s identity, the event’s organisers said in a statement last week they extended their “heartfelt condolences” to his family, to whom they would continue to offer support. “We appreciate the quick work of onsite water safety and medical personnel who provided the athlete with medical support,” the statement reads. Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious and a report would be prepared for the Coroner. In 2015, 39-year-old Brett Powell died while completing a swim at the event. More than 2000 triathletes took part in the event across the IRONMAN 70.3 Western Australia Asia-Pacific Championship and IRONMAN Western Australia races.
