West Aussies are being told to prepare now for a severe storm set to smash parts of the State on Thursday.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a warning just after 7am on Wednesday, alerting residents to a strong cold front approaching the South West.

“(The strong cold front) will bring a vigorous westerly flow with it, with gusty showery conditions expected over parts of the South West land division from early Thursday morning,” it said.

“Westerly winds with damaging wind gusts of around 90 to 100km/h are possible over coastal parts of the South West and lower west districts as far north as Rockingham.

“Gusty conditions will expand over the remaining warning area, with isolated damaging wind gusts reaching 90km/h inland as the front moves across the south-west on Thursday afternoon.”

Locations that may be affected include Albany, Bunbury, Busselton, Esperance, Mandurah, Margaret River and Mt Barker.

While the weather is typical for this time of year, Emergency WA has told people to act now to ensure their safety and has urged residents to follow the below:

WHAT TO DO:

  • Pack away, secure or tie down outdoor furniture, trampolines and other loose items around your home that could be picked up and thrown by strong winds.
  • Prepare an emergency kit with a radio that runs off batteries, a torch, spare batteries and a first aid kit.
  • Trim branches around your home to prevent them falling on your roof or car.
  • Clear gutters and downpipes so they do not overflow after heavy rain.
  • Boat owners should securely moor their boats.
