Trio of chances for first-year trainer

Cameron NewboldAlbany Advertiser

First-year trainer Rebecca Wallrodt is excited about the opportunity to notch a second victory in her fledgling career when she saddles up her stable’s three runners in this afternoon’s nine-race card at Percy Spencer Racecourse.

Wallrodt gained her licence to train late last year and joined rare company with a debut win when Singa Doll broke her maiden status at Mt Barker on November 13.

With three horses in her small stable, Wallrodt has had solid results since her dream start.

Singa Doll has been placed twice and stablemates Our Buddy Boy and Piccolo Joe each ran second on January 14.

The Albany trainer has had 10 starters since November and will search for her second triumph today with consistent mare Singa Doll contesting the Max Solutions Handicap (1512m).

The five-year-old raced wide from the 600m last start and finished 11th, beaten 5¾ lengths.

Jockey Colin Haddon replaces Chris Parnham today.

Singa Doll will jump from barrier 11 but gets in well at the weight with 55kg.

“Last start she had a wide barrier and jumped really well,” Wallrodt said.

“She went back and couldn’t get in, but even though she has drawn wide again I think Albany will be a bit easier to find a spot plus it’s up over a bit of ground.”

Wallrodt also gave each-way hopes to new stable acquisition Our Buddy Boy, who ran an impressive second first-up, and Piccolo Joe after his second-placed effort last start.

“Our Buddy Boy was unlucky the other day, he got a check at the 300m and really opened up the last 50m,” she said.

“If Piccolo does what he did the other day, he is a chance; he should have benefited fitness-wise from that run.”

Lucy Warwick retains the ride on Our Buddy Boy, who looks ideally placed from gate four with 56kg in the Wellington & Reeves Real Estate Handicap (1100m).

Piccolo Joe went down by half a length to Pigeon Post on January 14 and will carry the same weight impost in today’s Carsmart Albany/Natrad Handicap (1512m).

The first of eight races is listed at 1.26pm today with the final event set down for 5.15pm.
