Trewern bounces back to victory
Albany driver Aydan Trewern has stamped his authority on the 2016-17 GWN7 WA Modified Sedan Series after scoring a dominant win in round 3 at Collie Speedway last Saturday night.
Trewern, a five-times series champion and former State titleholder, failed to race in the opening round and then had mechanical issues in the washed-out second round at Mt Barker’s Les Gorman Park.
However, the Albany speedster bounced back to his best form in round 3, leading every lap of the 20-lap final to take top honours from Anthony King.
After more mechanical issues in hot laps, Trewern finished fifth in his first heat and then won his next preliminary event but further problems with his car prevented him from starting in the third round of heat races.
Trewern shot back into calculations in the top 10 shootout as he moved himself up the running order significantly, but fell at the final hurdle as King beat him to claim pole position.
It mattered little though as Trewern powered into the lead at the start of the feature race and was eventually able to shake the persistent King on his way to victory by more than five seconds.
Further back in the pack, a terrific battle for the minor placings developed but Albany’s Nathan Penn, who stepped up from his usual production sedan ranks, drove a super race to close in on the leading duo late and take third place. Allan Mortimer, Neville Man-sted and Albany’s Miranda Ball rounded out the top six while fellow Albany members Blake Watson and Steve Beres were forced to retire from the event.
Albany competitor Michael Clark, who led the series heading into round 3, also suffered mechanical dramas and failed to get past hot laps.
King has taken over the series lead and holds a 45-point advantage from Mansted with Watson slipping to third and Clark now fourth. The fourth round will be held at Albany’s Attwell Park Speedway on January 7, which doubles as the lucrative South Coast Classic with $5000 on the line for the feature race winner.
