Peaks crush depleted Railways side
Manypeaks dealt Railways just their second loss of the 2016-17 season after a superb bowling performance guided them to a convincing victory in round 10 of the Albany Cricket Association A-grade competition on Saturday afternoon at Tigerland.
A severely depleted Tigers outfit, minus captain Zane Marwick and fellow regulars Nathan Crudeli, Tim Edmunds, Jeremy Wood and Brendan Crudeli, were no match for the side they defeated in last season’s grand final.
The Tigers won the toss and batted but were immediately put under pressure by the Peaks seam bowlers with Brendan Grogan and Matt Hope both striking in their first overs respectively.
Liam Want became Grogan’s second victim and when Grogan played a hand in running out key player Matt Walters for 9 the Tigers had slumped to 4-27.
Middle-order batsman Matt Wolfe briefly steadied the ship before flashing at a wide ball to be caught on 31 and his dismissal at 6-61 virtually brought to an end their innings.
Wade Anning destroyed the lower order with 3-5 off four overs as the Tigers were all out for 71, their lowest total of the season.
Grogan finished with 2-19 in his eight-over spell while fellow seamers Hope, Myles O’Meehan and Warwick Durack all claimed a wicket each.
Peaks opener Bryce Durack was out in the fifth over of the chase, cleaned bowled by Tigers fast bowler Coen Marwick, but it would be the only breakthrough before the game was decided.
Experienced all-rounder Ryan Kinnear and talented left-hander Shayne Wornes quickly set about peeling off the required runs as they comfortably passed the score in the 17th over with nine wickets in hand.
Kinnear played with plenty of freedom in his 39 but fell to Ryan Tindale to end a 86-run partnership, but Wornes kicked on and looked set to reach triple figures with some lusty hitting. Skipper Craig Sinclair helped himself to a second half-century of the season, with his 56 part of a 99-run stand with Wornes, who fell shortly after Sinclair’s wicket for an impressive 76.
Peaks eventually finished with 7-278 from their 50 overs, adding some vital percentage points to the emphatic 207-run win.
Meanwhile, Denmark recorded their third win of the season, getting over the line in a thrilling contest against Collingwood Park.
Batting first, Park were in all sorts of trouble at 6-72 after their top order failed to fire with only Jesse Spaanderman (33) getting a start.
A 36-run partnership between Hayden Burling and captain Tim Pyle helped halt the Magpies momentum before the latter began to score quickly on his way to a vital half-century.
Pyle finished with 65 as his side managed 169 all out following an early onslaught from Ryan Guilfoyle (3-21) and Jason Benson (3-34) with the ball.
The Magpies had steady contributions down the order in the chase, anchored by a patient 36 not out from veteran Peter Ross as they reached the victory target in the 48th over with two wickets in hand.
Ross was well supported by Jeff Atkinson (34), new recruit Ryan Gaerth (24) and all-rounder Adam Falls (23) as they finished 8-174 declared.
