Federal Government to inject $40m into Great Northern Highway improvement between Newman and Port Hedland

Roads in the Pilbara will be improved after the Federal Government announced it would invest $40 million into upgrading overtaking lanes between Newman and Port Hedland. The Government announced it would invest $40 million into the $50 million project to upgrade Great Northern Highway as part of its Newman to Katherine corridor project. The project would see the construction and upgrade of high priority overtaking lanes along Great Northern Highway between Newman and Port Hedland. Work is expected to commence in early 2023 and support 90 direct and indirect jobs. It is hoped the upgrades would improve road safety, reduce congestion and improve travel times. Durack MHR Melissa Price said these projects would make roads safer, reduce travel times and boost the economy. “Investing in infrastructure upgrades ensures we are planning for a better future, giving locals the roads and services they need and deserve,” she said. “The Morrison Government will continue to invest in the projects that keep commuters and freight moving, create jobs, and make our nation and economy stronger, as well as boosting regional employment. “The Great Northern Highway project is expected to support 90 direct and indirect jobs.” The project is expected to be completed by late 2025.
