TIMELINE OF MARIBYRNONG FLOOD REVIEW:

* October 14, 2022: Hundreds of properties in Melbourne's inner west are inundated when the Maribyrnong River floods. Residents begin to blame the Flemington Racecourse's flood wall for pushing water into their homes and businesses.

* October 16, 2022: Premier Daniel Andrews announces Melbourne Water will conduct a review of the flood event, with a particular focus on the impact of the racecourse levee.

* October 17, 2022: The premier dismisses concerns over the review's independence. Melbourne Water chair John Thwaites excuses himself from the process as he was deputy premier and water minister when the Flemington levee was approved in 2007.

* October 28, 2022: Melbourne Water starts to establish the review. In a release, it states it will examine the causes of the flooding, including the impact of the racecourse wall. It also says an independent person will be appointed to lead the review.

* December 15, 2022: Nick Wimbush is appointed to lead the Maribyrnong review. Melbourne Water says public submissions will open on January 17 but the terms of reference are still being developed.

* January 17, 2023: Public submissions open for the flood inquiry and the terms of references are released. Specific policy responses, future potential mitigation measures, overall emergency responses and flood recovery are noted as being outside of the inquiry's scope.

* January 18, 2023: Some residents express concerns the review is too limited. Melbourne Water defends its terms of reference, saying areas like emergency flood warnings are outside of the organisation's remit.

* January 20, 2023: The Victorian Greens announce it will push for a parliamentary inquiry into the Maribyrnong floods when state parliament returns. The party also accuses the government of trying to deflect blame.

* February 7, 2023: Melbourne Water announces Nick Wimbush will step away from the review after it's revealed he was on a local planning panel when a Maribyrnong River flood overlay was considered. Premier Daniel Andrews denies there's an actual conflict of interest but supports Mr Wimbush's decision. The Greens introduce their parliamentary inquiry motion to the upper house.
