Two Narrogin heroes extinguish a neighbour's house fire with a backyard hose saving the family and their home

Two Narrogin locals rushed to extinguish a fire at their neighbours’ house on Tuesday, saving the family’s home with just bowls of water and a backyard hose. The family narrowly avoided tragedy when their Doney Street home was accidentally set alight Tuesday afternoon. After a bedroom went up in flames, a woman ran outside crying for help and caught the attention of two men who were playing with their families across the street. Clad in Ugg boots and casual clothes, FIFO workers Kyle Stokes and Jason Gray ran into the home and found the bed, curtains, and half of the bedroom on fire. The two men made countless trips to the kitchen and filled bowls of water to throw onto the fire before locating the hose with the help of the family’s male friend. Mr Stokes said thick smoke had collected on the roof, making it difficult to breathe and see. “I didn’t want two little girls to have no house tonight,” he said. “We dragged the mattress out while it was still in flames — it was covered in oil and was the main cause of the spreading fire. “It was very close to not being able to be put out with just water bowls and a hose.” Emergency services received the triple-0 call at 4pm but the blaze had already been extinguished when they arrived. The local heroes had completed basic fire safety training through their FIFO work and Mr Stokes had dealt with bushfires in the past when volunteering for the SES and intermediate bushfire service. The three adults and two children inside the house escaped without injury. “It is nice being in Narrogin because we all come out and help each other,” Mr Stokes said.
