State Government to transfer Northwood Street site at half price discount to the Shire of Narrogin for housing

Nearly 2000 square metres of land has been transferred to a Wheatbelt local government for half price to support the town’s housing demands. The State Government has agreed to transfer the 1785 square metre Northwood Street site to the Shire of Narrogin at a 50 per cent discount to enable a range of housing options and increase affordable housing availability. The shire expressed interest in acquiring the land for residential housing, including worker accommodation in light of the forecasted renewable energy projects and regional initiatives. The Cook Labor Government approved the sale of Crown land in the Wheatbelt region as part of its Housing Diversity Pipeline program. This partners with local government, industry and not-for-profit organisations to deliver housing outcomes on State Government landholdings for local communities. Shire of Narrogin chief executive Dale Stewart was pleased with the arrangement. “The development of this site aligns with our broader housing strategy, which aims to mitigate the housing crisis and accommodate Narrogin’s growth,” Mr Stewart said. “By increasing housing availability for essential workers, we can enhance the quality of local services and strengthen the capacity of our businesses, schools, healthcare providers, and local government services. “This, in turn, supports Narrogin’s position as a thriving regional hub. “Whilst the Shire has no current investment for housing on this specific site budgeted, the Shire intends to develop land which could include this lot.” Lands and housing minister John Carey said their Government was continuing to support regional housing. “Our Government is doing everything we can to bolster the supply of housing throughout Western Australia through our record $3.2 billion investment in housing and homelessness measures,” Mr Carey said. “The Housing Diversity Pipeline is unlocking lazy government land to boost housing supply and the sale of the land is expected to promote regional growth, economic diversification and contribute positively to the long-term growth in the Shire of Narrogin. “We continue to work with regional local governments to identify land for housing and other projects that support our regional communities.”
