Jonathon Ian James Brown: Wheatbelt man jailed for 11 months for violent attack on mother, obstructing police

A Wheatbelt man who punched his mother so hard he fractured his finger while yelling “you will die” before assaulting a police officer has been jailed for 11 months. Jonathon Ian James Brown appeared in Narrogin Magistrates Court via video link from Hakea Prison on Tuesday to be sentenced for aggravated assault causing bodily harm and obstructing a public officer. The 35-year-old had previously pleaded guilty to the assault on November 19 and in his Tuesday appearance also pleaded guilty to the obstruction charge. Police prosecutor Sgt Natalie Parker told the court how an intoxicated Brown attacked his 52-year-old mother at her Kulin home on September 20, yelling “you will die” and repeatedly punching her in the head so hard he fractured his finger. When Brown lost his balance 15-minutes into the attack, his mother escaped to a neighbour’s house and called police. She was treated in hospital for a cut lip, swollen eyes, and bruising to her face. Police found Brown curled up on the floor and escorted him to the Kondinin Police Station where he hurled abuse at an officer, including making comments about his children, before physically attacking him. Defence lawyer Wendy Stewart said her client accepts the facts and that while alcohol was a big part of Brown’s offending, it was not an excuse. Sgt Parker said a term of imprisonment would be appropriate. Magistrate Erin O’Donnell said it was a “very serious offence” and served Brown with a family violence restraining order to protect the victim, preventing him from contacting her or going within 20m of her home or work. She sentenced Brown to 11 months for the assault and four months for the obstruction to be served concurrently and backdated to September 20 with eligibility for parole.
