Carnarvon police cracking down on local drug use following multiple charges

Gascoyne police are cracking down on drug use in the Carnarvon area, after officers charged multiple people with separate drug charges last week.

Police executed a search warrant at a Carnarvon address on Monday November 18, where they found two kilograms of cannabis.

A man was charged with possessing a prohibited drug with intent to supply.

Carnarvon detective Sgt Luke Wood said the bust was the result of hard work from police.

“It’s a significant amount of cannabis,” he said.

“We did our homework and thought potentially this guy was dealing cannabis, and it was a positive result.”

On Thursday last week, Carnarvon police seized a quantity of methylamphetamine following a search warrant.

Alleged stolen property was also found.

Three people have been charged with drug and property offences.

Sgt Wood said the successful week for police was thanks to insight from the community.

“Drugs are always on our radar, it’s just our ability to get to it,” he said.

“We rely on information from the community, and while it was a couple of grams of meth, it puts people on notice that police will come knocking.”

Meanwhile, Carnarvon detectives are asking the public for help regarding a number of cannabis plants being seized.

Numerous cannabis plants were taken in South Plantations, near Carnarvon, after police executed a search warrant at a plantation on South River Road about a month ago.

Police estimated each cannabis plant was worth about $5000.

According to police, a trafficable amount of cannabis was found, and it was believed to be part of a commercial cannabis operation.

“A lot of plantations, they lease out their crops, so there’s no documentation as such as to who grows what,” Sgt Wood said.

“It could be one of a few people, we have our suspicions of who it could be but we’re asking the public who may have more information than we do to come forward.”
